You may apply for cancellation

Debt cancellation is an opportunity for your debt to the public sector to be cancelled or reduced. If you would like your debt to be cancelled, you have two options, depending on your situation and circumstances in life.

This page is for private individuals, sole proprietorships and co-owners of limited partnerships.

If you are able to pay, you must pay

Before you investigate whether your debt can be cancelled, you can use our indicative debt calculator. It can give you an idea of how long it would take for you to pay off your debt. If this appears hopeless, read more on this page about the opportunities for debt cancellation.

Our indicative debt calculator

Apply for debt cancellation, if your debt is hopelessly high. Collect documentation about your finances and send us an application. We will assess your debt and the material you have submitted to see if debt can be written off.

Option 1: Debt cancellation on the basis of fixed requirements

This option is for people who:

  • for an extended period of time have received social assistance benefits or education assistance, and
  • have subsequently been in education and/or been employed for a certain period of time, when applying for debt cancellation.

You have the opportunity for cancellation of half of your debt on the application date, but no more than DKK 100,000.

You can apply as from 1 April 2025.

Requirements that you must fulfil on the application date:

  • Your debt is at least DKK 50,000, including interest, fees and costs.
  • You have received public benefits for at least 30 months within the last six years. You have subsequently been in education, ordinary employment or self-employed for at least 24 months.

Please note

  • You can only be granted debt cancellation on the basis of fixed requirements in one instance.
  • There are categories of debt that cannot be cancelled under this option: fines, confiscation debt, victim reparation contributions, mortgage-secured debt, debt due to compensation and debt due to unlawful public benefits/unemployment, sickness or maternity/paternity benefits (dagpenge).
